About
AFT Washington’s Save Our Students (SOS) campaign was launched to call attention to the draconian budget cuts to public education in Washington State during the last three years. Almost $700 million has been cut from higher education alone, and the governor is proposing $166 million more in this biennium.
Class sizes are increasing. Tuition has skyrocketed. College enrollment is at its highest level ever as people lost jobs during the Great Recession. On top of this, corporations have been shipping jobs overseas and getting tax breaks.
The goal of the SOS campaign is to ask the governor and the Legislature to consider a more responsible balanced approach to our budget deficit by closing unnecessary tax loopholes, prioritizing job creation and funding the programs that train and educate our future workforce and invest in our economic recovery, and support a referendum to the people and let us vote on a revenue-generating proposal.
